Split air conditioning requires an indoor and an outdoor unit. The outdoor unit is larger than the indoor unit and requires a suitable mounting position on an outside wall, floor or roof.

Window or "through the wall" type air conditioners are not of the "split" type but an integral all in one unit and require a suitable window mounting position or large hole through the wall to be installed.
They are typically noisier indoors than the more commonly used split type.
